EDT (Essential Driver Training) is a mandatory course of 12 one-hour driving lessons that every first-time learner permit holder in Ireland must complete with an RSA-approved driving instructor (ADI) before taking the driving test. Every instructor listed on this site is on the official RSA ADI register.

You must complete the 12 mandatory EDT lessons, and you must hold your learner permit for at least 6 months before sitting the test. Most learners take additional practice and pretest lessons on top of EDT — instructors near your test centre can advise based on your driving.

Pretest lessons are focused preparation for the driving test itself: practising the test routes around your local test centre, correcting habits that lose marks, and running mock tests against the RSA marking sheet. Yes — many instructors offer automatic driving lessons, and you can sit the driving test in an automatic. Note that if you pass the test in an automatic, your licence is restricted to automatic vehicles (code 78).
